This certificate (along with many others) is issued by the Pilgrim\u2019s Office in Santiago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pilgrim Mass<\/strong> &#8211; This mass takes place every day at noon in Santiago de Compostela cathedral. It is a very special moment for most pilgrims, having finally reached their destination after a long journey. If you are lucky, you might see the impressive \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/caminoways.com\/botafumeiro-santiago-de-compostela\">botafumeiro<\/a>\u2018 in action. (I understand that it is being repaired and that I won&#8217;t see it in October, 2026.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hugging St James<\/strong> &#8211; Pilgrims can walk up to the gilded 13th- century figure of Saint James at the back of the main alter in the Cathedral in Santiago and hug it (known as the Abrazo del Apostol &#8211; Embrace of the Apostle. Pilgims might offer the following words: \u201cThank you my friend Saint James, brother Saint James, for helping me to get here! Thank you for your company, for your testimony and your legacy!\u201d (It is considered to represent a reunion with God, with faith or with oneself.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3a88641f wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/pilgrim-1024x559.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/pilgrim-1024x559.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/pilgrim-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/pilgrim-766x418.jpg 766w, https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/pilgrim.jpg 1408w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Greeting other pilgrims<\/strong> by saying \u201cBuen camino\u201d (Spanish) or \u201cBom caminho\u201d (Portugese) \u2013 means good path or good journey <strong>and by Responding<\/strong> with <em>&#8220;Obrigado, igualmente&#8221;<\/em> (thank you, likewise).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Another Greeting to Pilgrims:<\/strong> When medieval walkers passed each other on the path to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, one would call out <em>&#8220;<\/em><strong><em>Ultreia!&#8221;<\/em> <\/strong>and the other would reply <em>&#8220;<strong>et suseia!&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Ultreia comes from the Latin <em>ultra<\/em> (meaning &#8220;beyond&#8221; or &#8220;more&#8221;) combined with <em>eia<\/em> (an interjection of joy or action). It translates roughly to &#8220;let&#8217;s go further,&#8221; &#8220;onward,&#8221; or &#8220;beyond&#8221;.
