The difference from Seville is palpable. Because yesterday we walked through a lot of the town and saw a number of the key sites, we had low expectations for today.

As is often the case, you often get pleasant surprises when your expectations are low. First, all of us seemed to be ready for, and enjoy, the relaxed tempo of a slow day. Then, we were happy with the activities which we elected to do and had a good midday meal.

Our first stop was to the Catedral de Evora. This cathedral is much smaller than the one in Seville but was nonetheless a significant one with a rich history. To begin, we climbed the bell tower to the roof which is supposedly the highest point in Evora. It is not as tall as the bell tower at the Catedral de Seville but still a good climb. I think that the stairs and hills on this trip may be having a positive effect on my legs ( and, hopefully, offsetting a few of the tapas). When I was young, I was not bothered by heights. On the roof, my sphincter tells me that this may no longer be the case. Regardless, the view from the roof of both the town and the surrounding plain was worth the climb.

After the bell tower, we toured the rest of the cathedral and the attached museum. This cathedral was still very impressive and very pretty. The museum had lots of beautiful art and artifacts showing the serious religious history of this cathedral. We ended this tour with a good cup of coffee in the cafeteria located in the cathedral garden.

Next up was a wine tasting, in a facility dedicated to local wines. It was only 11:15 a.m. and I demurred because I could not recall the rules regarding the sun and the yardarm for this time zone. Jesse and Laura said that they enjoyed the tasting and I enjoyed the displays and the history of this wine-making area which was well- presented in an adjoining room.

For the afternoon, all that we had planned was a visit to the Chapel of Bones which is a chapel with walls made of human bones. As gruesome as this might sound, it has deep religious meaning and is, I think, intended to remind us of the shortness of our mortal life and the Christian way to everlasting life. (I tried to take some photos of the signs explaining some of the significance.)

The Chapel of Bones was interesting but it was located adjoining the Church of St. Francis. The church itself was a pleasant surprise – very beautiful and with lots of beautiful religious art and with an interesting museum attached. Another pleasant surprise was an attached exhibit of nativity scenes consisting of 6,300 pieces. The nativity scenes were made in every conceivable way and with every conceivable material. It was fun to see with Sage who knew what the nativity scene was and who was unusually engrossed by it for someone so young.

Learning from our mistakes, we had made reservations for dinner in a restaurant that opened at 6:00 p.m. rather than 7:30 p.m. This was another bit of good luck. The waiter and chef seemed to be the owners. They were very welcoming (even asking to hold Jasper) and went out of their way to help us order and to explain how the food was prepared (I think they could have sold us a time share if they had been so inclined). It was a good way to cap off a good day.

Tomorrow we leave Evora. It was a good stop but probably the right length of time.

Seeking inspiration for today’s post.
