It turned out to be a health day! After the Vatican tour yesterday and overnight, Brandon became quite sick, suffering on the couch and wanting to be left alone. (I couldn’t help but wonder if we shouldn’t have taken some time to pray or ask for a blessing (which was an option – but with a big lineup) while at the Vatican). When we purchased some medicine and a mask for Brandon, we also purchased a COVID-19 test and confirmed that he was positive.

Leaving Brandon to suffer alone (his preference), Marley, Payton and I set out on a walkabout. Despite the circumstances, this walk was a highlight as we stumbled upon some great sights. There is a spectacular building/monument to the unification of Italy with a Parthenon-like building on top of a hill with about 144 steps (it is hard to keep an accurate count and take deep breaths at the same time). The climb was worthwhile as it gave a great view of the City and a chance to watch two wedding parties (Of course there were two separate churches at the top as well.)

As we walked around the back of these churches, we were looking down on a lot of the archeological work on the Roman forum. We wandered down and explored with thousands of other tourists. I took Latin in school. Apart from the Roman numerals, I could not read much of the inscriptions (I did remember what SPQR stood for and could make sense of some of them.) (Interesting that for some reason, I can still sing jingle bells in Latin.)

i will be attaching pictures of this walk rather than trying to describe all that we saw. But, I did want to confirm that, walking around the outside of the Colosseum, I was impressed again with what the Romans were able to do – it did not disappoint.

The rest of this day was spent close to the Air B & B. Marley, Payton and I went for dinner at a nearby restaurant (there were lots of choices) and brought a gelato back for Brandon. By the end of the day, it looked like the rest of us were going to get sick (l may have to cross having Covid in Rome off my bucket list.

This was supposed to have been a relaxing poke-about day between the Vatican tour yesterday and a tour of the Colosseum booked for tomorrow.
