{"id":491,"date":"2024-02-15T16:35:18","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T00:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/?p=491"},"modified":"2024-02-15T16:35:19","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T00:35:19","slug":"are-we-there-yet-miscalculations-an-adult-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/77tozero.ca\/?p=491","title":{"rendered":"Are we there yet? &#8211; Miscalculations (An adult story)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As I mentioned in my last post, our plan for the 15th was to visit Sintra which Dr. Google describes as &#8220;a resort town in the foothills of Portugal&#8217;s Sintra mountains near the capital, Lisbon&#8221;. We had made a reservation to see the National Palace of Pena at 10:30 a.m. (the first miscalculation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We planned to get up early and be on our way by 8 at the latest to beat the tours and get parking ( the second miscalculation &#8211; we were all tired and slept late so that we didn&#8217;t start towards our car until 9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>it took us a lot longer (3rd miscalculation) to get to the car and navigate out of the City than we expected so we arrived late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point we understood that we might be able to park at the Castle and, if there happened to be no parking, Jesse could drop us off and then walk the expected 30 minutes from the parking below. Alternatively, we could pay to take one of the touristy, glorified golf carts. By this point, we had made a couple of more miscalculations, namely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>People are not allowed to take their cars on the road to the Castle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the walk is quite long and much more than 30 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the golf cart guy informed us that he was not permitted to take infants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the golf cart guy was wrong  when he said we could catch a taxi just a few blocks up the hill and around the corner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To shorten the story &#8211; we started walking and got so far that it made no sense to go back. We walked for longer than an hour up an extremely steep cobblestone path. Apparently it would equate (in elevation) to about walking up Burnaby Mountain to SFU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesse had to carry Sage, Laura had Jasper and I was carrying the backpack (fortunately I had forgotten the stroller which would have been useless in any event).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We eventually made it to the top. Not sure how Jesse and Laura did it. For that matter, I&#8217;m a bit surprised that I made it without cramping up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the end, it was worth it and something to remember.
