Lisbon – February 16th<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No driving today but a casual walking day to tour the city more (So no mountain climb today but still lots of hills.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We fixed a simple breakfast at our Air B&B and set out early. After a short walk from our rental, we boarded a trolley. This was not a typical European trolley but a very old one. Lisbon maintains these old cars. I think, partly because they complement the tourism, but also because they are functional. it is amazing to see them zip through the many very narrow streets. At times, we were about a foot and a half from buildings as well as the cars seemingly parked holus bolus everywhere including the sidewalks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trolley ride was fun and we got to see some different parts of the city in a new way. Jesse and Laura wanted to see a famous cafe, A Brasileira. Apparently, it has been around a long time and was a hangout for poets and artists. I am not sure if its this history or the awesome pastries which attracted Jesse. The visit was worthwhile – the coffee great, the pastries out of this world and wonderful decor and atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After coffee we explored this part of the city. Lisbon is clearly a touristy city (the many shops selling fridge magnets were the first clue followed closely by the abundance of sidewalk restaurants) but I am enjoying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our gastronomic tour continued when we wound up in a local market. It was fun to see all the different fruits, vegetables,flowers and fish (again. It is evident that Lisbon is on the ocean). There was a very large and unique food court in the market. (Did you guess that we stopped and ate there?). The Portuguese seem to be able to have alcohol of all types in a food court like this without any problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the market, we headed back to the Air B&,B for naps (I am only doing this for the kids.). Everyone’s circadian rhythms are starting to adjust. Jesse and Laura will get better sleep once the kids get back into a routine similar to their routine at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening was spent with more walking\/exploring. We had a bunwich (I forgot the name) at the start of the walk. The weather had been good all day and was only a bit coolish for this walk. We wound up eating at a very nice wine bar – nice tapas and a selection of 3 different glasses of wine. The price for what we got was very reasonable. It was very enjoyable and the two kids did really well. The staff were great with the kids and didn’t seem to mind when Sage’s valuable collection of street pebbles fell to the floor as I helped her put her jacket on. I felt a bit off for a while during dinner (I think the fatty meat in the bunwich got me), but Jesse and Sage (who really liked the meat and cheese) were able to cover for me. Jasper stuck to his version of a latte but otherwise everyone seems to be enjoying the temporary reprieve from their vegan diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
