Receiving inspiration for today’ s post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good news – we were able to figure out how to use the elevator. It is pretty small and we all just barely fit inside. This may be an issue if we try all the local delicacies which Jesse put on our expedition list for Cadiz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Air B &B is in an old building but it has been fully renovated. It is very nice and our suite is very modern and, once again, well-appointed. One unique feature is the open space,(a!most a courtyard) which goes from the ground floor to the top. Our suite has multiple inside windows which we can open into this space. It makes for unique lightning in our suite. I am guessing that this feature is functional as well by enhancing air circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura did a good job in selecting and booking our Air B &B’s.(I am amazed at what both Laura and Jesse can do on their phones.) I think the location here in Cadiz looks to be especially good. Our building opens onto an interesting shop-filled street (with a gelato shop right next door). I believe that we also are within walking distance of a number of the key sights to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather was very good again today. It feels like summer to us but it must feel cool to some of the Spanish as some of them seem to be bundled up. We took advantage of the weather to walk around and find a nice spot for our morning coffees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the attractions in Cadiz is a partially excavated Roman theatre (Theatrum Balbi) built in the first century B.C. It was discovered in 1980 and was one of the largest in the Roman Empire. Ever since I took Latin in high school, I have always had an interest in everything Roman. I like reading historical fiction about Rome and one of the travel highlights of my life so far was walking Hadrian’s Wall in England. So. I was excited to have a chance to see this theatre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theatre excavation is really well presented.The presentation centre attached to the excavation explains how Roman theatre developed and how the building was constructed. First, they have large plexiglas portholes which allow visitors to look down into the excavation below. They also have models and an informative audiovisual presentation to help you understand what you are. seeing. Then. entering the theatre through a restored underground passageway, you get to see the theatre. Like many of the Roman structures that I have seen, it gave me great respect for what the Romans were able to do with their engineering. (The photos attached don’t do justice to what we saw.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two more observations about the theatre: (1) First, it was free (surprising for a tourist heavy city); and (2) you can see why the ruins took so long to find – in the centuries after it fell in to disuse, they just built new structures on top of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course all of this historical exploration left us hungry. So. we went to a tapas bar that Jesse and Laura knew about (no idea how) and had a tasty meal of tapas for lunch before returning to the Air B & B for the naps. (It is taking some effort on my part but I am starting to adjust to this lifestyle!}<\/p>\n\n\n\n
