Cadiz
Some facts about Cadiz:

- One of the oldest inhabited cities in Western Europe. Pp
- founded by the Phoenicians as a trading post and known as Gadir.
- The Phoenicians lost control of Gadir when they had trouble arising from the conquest of Tyre by the Babylonians in 573 B.C.
- later Carthage filled the power vacuum and was a depot for Hannibal’s conquest of Southern Iberia.
- The city fell to the Romans in 206 B.C.
- The city was conquered by the Visgoths in 551 A.D.
- It was under Moorish rule between 711 A.D. and 1262 A.D.
- The city flourished in the age of exploration.Two of Christopher Columbus’s voyages started from there. It became the home port of the Spanish treasure fleet.
