Today started with a bang – a thunderclap! It had rained overnight and the storm continued through the early part of the morning. The clouds socked in around these mountains was actually very pretty (back to English today – although there are lots of Germans here; it is only about 4.5 hours to Munich from here).
When the weather cleared, we drove to the beach and went for a hike up Monte *. Prior to World War One, this part of Italy, Trentino, was a part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire and only became part of the kingdom of Italy in 1918. Lake Garda (which is 50k long and about 20k wide) was, I suspect, near the border and probably strategically important. So an artillery battery designed to withstand attacks from the new, more powerful howitzers developed at the turn of the century was built on Mount * to defend Riva del Garda and nearby Toberle.
Our hike was about 2K in length and about 120 metres in elevation and the destination was the artillery battery which had been restored in 2018. The hike was not too strenuous but I may be hearing from a different set of muscles tomorrow. The views were great. One one side we could see Toberle and on the other side Riva del Garda. Most of the pictures which I have attached are from the hike.
Our timing was good as it started to rain again just as we got back to our car. The balance of the day was mainly indoors and spent relaxing.
Tomorrow is our last day in Riva del Garda and the plan is to again bike. My muscles have ordered an eBike.
