June 3rd – San Gimignano

We spent a quiet morning at our Air B & B. The patio and view are so nice that we enjoyed simply relaxing.

After lunch we drove to San Gimignano which is a medieval hilltop town surrounded by 13th Century walls. It has been a UNESCO site since 1990. This town was strategically located (ie a relay point for travellers going to and from Rome) and flourished. in this town, the wealthy liked to show their success by building a tower. At one time there were 72 of them (4 still remaining).

Our drive was about 40 minutes and was very scenic. A typical Italian drive – lots of narrow roads, trouble locating parking and very small parking stalls.

The town – particularly it’s buildings, architecture and streets were interesting – fairly easy to imagine what life might have been like there in the 13th Century. Once again lots of shops to explore as well.

Our trip is starting to wind down now. Tomorrow we drive close to Rome so we catch our flights home on the 5th.
